The dunes are a structural and landscape element of the Baix Llobregat beaches, of great ecological importance and for the permanence of many beaches. They are currently threatened by urban pressure and rising sea levels linked to climate change.
It is a European project that aims to find management formulas that allow dune processes to be recovered. It consists of the reconstruction of dune relief and/or recovery of some missing habitats behind the dune zone, making frequent use of the beach compatible with the dunes, promoting good practices among beach users, and encouraging participation in this project (#volemdunes).
The “Hybrid Dunes” program is coordinated by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area and began to take shape in 2010 with the organization of a first international workshop since the program is part of the European project OPERAs (Operational potential of ecosystem research applications). Development began on the land in 2014, with two phases of reconstruction of the beaches of Castelldefels, Gavà and Viladecans. In 2016, a third phase of elimination of exotic and invasive plants that populate the dunes was carried out. Currently, work continues to strengthen the dune ecosystem.
